I like the Calvin and Hobbes similarity. But it sounds a little dark with the tough mom. I wonder if it's the drawings that turn off the kids you observed or the subject matter.

Like Diary of A Wimpy Kid. The style is very delightful, recorded in a diary with comic pictures. To me it is the best way to relax through reading.
